Special Events

The students at Errington Special Education Centre enjoy the same benefits as students in other schools. There are a range of Special Events and Celebrations that occur during the year.

Weekly Assembly

A school assembly is held weekly to support students to develop skills in being part of an audience and also provide the opportunity for students to develop skills in a range of performance mediums (eg plays, dance, sharing artwork). This also provides the opportunity to formally acknowledge achievement through the presentation of Achievement Awards and also celebrate individual student birthdays. The assembly also provides a forum for information sharing with students about events happening in the school.

Sandringham Visit

Each year, during the Adelaide Festival of Arts or Come Out, a group of drama students from Sandringham Secondary College in Victoria visit Ashford to engage in drama activities with the Ashford students. The visit usually involves the Sandringham students initially mingling and interacting with the Ashford students then moving on to more structured activities involving role play games and a musical performance.

Youth Week Activities

During term 1 students from the Senior Section of the school participate in a variety of Youth Week Activities in collaboration with the City of West Torrens Council and other Community Partners.

Book Week

During term three the annual Book Week celebrations are held. Prior to Book Week the students are involved in a range of activities associated with the Book Week theme. The celebratory Book Week Assembly is held and all classes in the school present the book they have studied.

Sports Day

The annual school sports day is held during term four. There are a variety of activities that occur on the day to ensure maximum participation for all students.

Sports Team

A group of students from the Intermediate and Senior Sections of the school are involved in an extended Sports Program. The students train weekly to learn a variety of skills and then use their skills when the team is entered into a range of Sporting Carnivals. The Sporting Carnivals include: athletics, 9 a side football, basketball and soccer.

End Of Year Celebration of Student Achievement

The End of Year Celebration of Student Achievement is a very important event in the School calendar. The ceremony is the culmination and celebration of all the hard work undertaken by the students during the year.

During this celebration all students receive a Certificate of Achievement to celebrate their individual successes during the year. In addition to every student receiving a Certificate of Achievement one student from each section of the school receives a special award for all round achievement. The criteria used by teachers to select the recipient include:

The special award for the Junior Section is the Daphne Gum award.

Daphne Gum was the first Principal of what was eventually called the Ashford House School for Cerebral Palsied Children before the students moved to Regency Park School. Daphne still has strong ties with the school and is on School Council.

The special award for the Intermediate Section is the Principal's award and the Senior Section award is the Douglas Smith Memorial Award. Douglas Smith used to jointly own the Florist shop at the Ashford Hospital and had close ties with the school so much so that he made Errington Special Education Centre a beneficiary in his will. This award is in recognition of his generosity.

A highlight of the ceremony is a PowerPoint display that continues through the celebration showing photographs of all students in the school and some of the activities they have been involved in during the year.

End of Year Family Celebration and Graduation

The End of Year Family Celebration and Graduation is a much talked about and entertaining event. The purpose of the celebration is for families of students and staff to come together to celebrate the completion of the school year and also farewell our Graduating students.

The evening begins with a meal which is held (weather permitting) on the front lawns of the school. Following the meal, families and students gather in the hall for class performances where every student in attendance participates in a performance with their class. A range of activities are performed by the classes which generally include singing, playing instruments, dance performances and plays.

Following the class performances the Graduating students are farewelled.
