School Organisation

Errington Special Education Centre is a Reception to Year 12 school that supports students with intellectual disabilities and additional impairments with a needs based curriculum. The school is divided into three sections, Junior, Intermediate and Senior, with each class having a teacher and School Services Officer (SSO).

The Junior Section of the school supports students aged from 5 to 10. In 2006 the Junior Section of the school comprises three classes.

The Intermediate Section of the School supports students aged from 10 to 14. In 2006 Intermediate Section of the school comprises two home classes.

The Senior Section of the school supports students from 14. Through the Post Compulsory Framework for Students with a Disability, students are deemed to have completed their schooling once they have completed sixteen units of the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) Stage 1. Students take four years to complete their SACE studies. In 2006 the Senior Section of the school comprises two home classes.

All classes have students with a range of abilities. Student placement in classes is based upon the chronological age of the students, friendship groups and also class complexity.

Timetable flexibility and individual packaging of subjects particularly in the Intermediate and Senior sections of the school means that the students undertake some activities with their home class but at other times they are placed in different groups to engage in a range of activities to meet their individual needs and priorities, eg woodwork, work skills, sport, literacy, sensory.

The teachers in each section of the school form teaching teams that meet regularly to discuss programming, activities, problem solve and other issues pertinent to their section.

In addition to class teachers, the school also has specialist teachers in Physical Education, Art and a Teacher Librarian.
